This week the focus was on the topic of ‘YOU’ and each individual’s future and how it will affect them. Students have been looking at future careers, study skills, learning styles, CV writing, relationships, stress management, the world, the universe and our surroundings.

Careers Talk with Rich. A guest speaker came into school on Tuesday to start the students project week off with a bang. He spoke to them about the idea of not giving up and following their dreams and aspirations.

Career Pilot – Visitors from Falmouth University spoke to students about a website that is now in place to support students in their path to finding future careers and colleges/universities.

.

“I found jobs I never thought existed, like a dog handler!”

“The use of career pilot helped me find careers in different sectors, I would love to work in the dance sector but I am now interested in looking at becoming a victim support officer.”

.

CV writing - Within this session students used a template to begin designing their own CVs in preparation for their own work experience, job applications and college applications.

“To prepare us for jobs, now so that we can be employed. It has also prepared us for our future careers and interviews. It is a skill we are never too young to learn”.

Study Skills – During this session we learnt about how to prepare ourselves for revision and managing ourselves. Students spoke about how they revise best and what works for them individually. Miss Coode shared tips that helped students gain an idea of how to plan their revision.

Stress management- As a teenager stress plays a large part in their emotional development. These sessions gave students ideas on managing their stress and understanding that everyone deals with their stress differently.

“I now know that I am not the only person that gets stressed and it is normal – I can now find ways to find balance in things like school and life”.

.

Learning styles. During this session students learnt about how they individually learn whether it be kinaesthetic, cognitive etc. It gave students an insight into ways that they can manage their own learning and revision in order to suit them.

“We got to learn about how we learn and how we can help ourselves. It will help us now and in the future”.

The Universe and The World – During this session students were posed the question ‘Who is the creator?’ They looked at the bigger picture was it science or religion that created our world. How did we get here? This session linked on to a focus on ‘the world’ itself and students researched their place in the world, what effect they have and where could they go in the future.

Trengwainton Gardens

A trip to Trengwaiton Gardens was also part of their week where students looked at nature and learnt about the age of the plants and trees and when the gardens were found. The National Trust works hard to stop the spread of diseases which in turn will cause extinction.

Students were also taught about genetically engineered plants which have been designed to stop and slow down the extinction process. Students looked at where they will be in the future if certain plants and animals became extinct and how our world is changing.

Members of the public commented on how well behaved and impressive our students were.

.

Consent & Healthy Relationships

This session was structured to raise awareness to students about their place in not only society, but also within their relationships with either parents, friends or partners. The use of discussion and sorting of scenarios allowed students to feel empowered and give their own opinion whilst respecting other students views.

.

Careers Fair

On Thursdays students had the chance to take part in a Careers Fair which also helped support what they had learnt during their Careers pilot sessions and gain even more knowledge and information about possible career choices which will help them first hand with their GCSE option choices.

Throughout the week students have been compiling their own journals with notes and diagrams illustrating what they have learnt. On Friday students worked in groups to develop their own exhibition which they presented for their peers to look at and help everyone gain more information and understanding about themselves and their future. The aim of the year 9 project week was to let the students focus on themselves and their place in the world. It embedded skills that students can apply during their preparation for option choices and GCSE exams.
